Have you ever dreamed of journeying through a winter wonderland aboard a classic train? The Stove Train operated by the Tsugaru Railway is sure to capture your heart. Beginning in 1930, the Stove Train has been running between Tsugaru-Goshogawara Station and Tsugaru-Nakasato Station in the deep snows of the Tsugaru region between December and March.
In contrast to the frozen landscape, the carriages are warm and cozy thanks to the presence of traditional potbelly stoves, with fresh coal delivered by train staff from time to time replenishing the crackling fires. If you’re up for a snack, buy some dried squid from one of friendly attendants, and watch as they grill them atop the flaming stove in front of your eyes until they’re ready to serve.
Otherwise, if you enjoy prefer to take in snow-swept scene outside the window together with a filling meal, the “Stove Bento” will certainly deepen your experience. In a specially made bamboo bento box, you’ll find onigiri rice balls together with locally sourced squid and prawns, along with vegetables offering vital nutrients and toothsome taste. Note that this bento must be reserved—but it’s more than worth it to try out all these local specialties in one treasure box! From breathtaking sights and a classic atmosphere to snow country soul food, the Stove Train is a delight no traveler should miss.
