Rabbit Island
2020.6.1
Celebrating its 20th anniversary this winter, this scenic railway runs through the Kushiro Marsh in the winter months only. The train runs between JR Kushiro Station and Shibecha Station, primarily on weekends. It makes only one round trip per day, with each leg lasting around 1 hour, 30 minutes. This old-fashioned steam locomotive chugging its way through picturesque scenery truly is a sight to behold. From the carriages you can see sprawling views of the snow-covered Kushiro Marsh, home to an abundance of rare wildlife. You may even catch glimpses of red-crowned cranes, which have a status as a designated Special Natural Monument of Japan. Carriages are equipped with potbelly stoves that you can use to cook dried squid (purchasable onboard) for a fun and tasty snack while you ride.
