In 1876, as Japan was undergoing major efforts toward modernization, the government hired William S. Clark, an American professor of chemistry and biology, as an advisor to help establish Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University). Clark spent eight months in Hokkaido, and he had a huge impact on the scientific and economic development of the island. His parting words to his students before his return home became very famous in Japan: "Boys, be ambitious!"
Today, a bronze statue of Clark occupies a prominent position on Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill, which overlooks Sapporo. It is not hard to imagine the great effect that Clark must have had on his students in those days. Around the statue, sheep can be
seen grazing leisurely on the extensive pastureland. The panoramic view of downtown Sapporo from the hill includes the gleaming stadium of Sapporo Dome.
From July to August, visitors can watch sheep shearing and also pick lavender from nearby lavender fields. Sapporo in summer is a time for enjoying the blue sky, fresh air and also the delicious local ice cream called Shiroi Koibito.
