Hozugawa Boat Ride
A Sea of Autumn Leaves
Native to Japan, the Dodan Tsutsuji, or Enkainthus perulatus trees, create an enchanting scenery of koyo, red autumn leaves. One of the best places to view this spectacular fall foliage is at Tajima Ankoku-ji Temple, established in the late Kamakura Period (1185-1333) and belonging to the Haitoku-ji branch of the Rinzai School, one of the three Zen sects of Buddhism in Japan. The temple hosts breathtaking 100-year old Dodan Tsutsuji trees that were planted in 1904 when the main hall was reconstructed. The view of the leaves from inside Ankoku-ji Temple is mesmerizing, with the sliding paper doors, shoji, creating a picture frame around the Dodan Tsutsuji trees.
